Springfield Primary School, Linlithgow, West Lothian (Scotland)
When Springfield Primary School won their Supergrounds Award they immediately started to create their brand new grassy play area.
The area now incorporates wooden play equipment, partially submerged tractor tyres, colourful mural boards designed by the children and multi coloured wooden fencing. Security of the site was also an important issue for the school who, with new vandal proof fences in place, now feel confident that the new grounds are well protected.
As project manager Linda Jamieson, an RBS Group employee, parent and PTA member at the school played a key role in the school transformation. She persuaded pupils and parents including work colleagues to get involved in additional fundraising schemes such as a weekend car wash as well as painting of the fence. The turn out from parents and pupils on these days was terrific.
The Supergrounds project management team made sure that the pupils became the driving force of the project and were involved in planning, designing and promoting the new super ground. This has helped to increase everyone’s involvement in wider changes within the school.
With the addition of their new physical play equipment, pupils at Springfield Primary now have a wider variety of exciting things to do. Deputy Head Teacher, Greg Welsh commented "The area has allowed for those pupils, who in the past didn't enjoy ball games, to be active and play with others. Pupils frequently comment on how much they enjoy using the new area."
"Our Supergrounds Advisor was a great help to the development. He was always on hand to advise. He also had a fantastic manner with the pupils and led them through each stage of their project. We could not praise him highly enough."
He also added "Linda was fantastic! Her enthusiasm for the project and the way in which she got other members of the school community involved was invaluable." Linda also received a recognition award from the district council for her involvement.
When asked what was the best part of the Supergrounds programme, Linda replied,”After the opening ceremony in which pupils celebrated in fancy dress as Disney characters, each class was allowed 10 minutes of play in the trim trail area and to see their faces was priceless. I was very lucky to have been part of that. I think it is fantastic what RBS are doing."
